“Fans will revel” in Virgins, Vixens & Viragos

VVV cover“In an eclectic program ranging across three centuries, four languages and a diverse array of idioms” (Gramophone), the celebrated mezzo-soprano has released her new album, Virgins, Vixens & Viragos, on the Onyx Classics label. The new disc marks Susan’s first solo album since 2008’s Un frisson français, which London’s Sunday Times named one of the “Best CDs of 2008,” calling it “one of the most delicious surprises of the year,” and which the Denver Post selected as one of the “Ten Classical Albums That Mattered In 2008.”

Her second album for Onyx, Virgins, Vixens & Viragos features an imaginative program inspired by iconic female characters of history, literature, and song. Accompanied by Graham’s frequent collaborator Malcolm Martineau, the album encompasses works by Purcell, Poulenc, Berlioz, Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Duparc, Porter, Sondheim, and Wolf – and includes Joseph Horovitz’s Lady Macbeth, a scena based on texts from Shakespeare’s drama. As Opera News declares, Susan’s “fans will revel” in the recital’s “sonic beauty.”
